Hanging baskets place floral beauty and fragrance at eye level wherever they are placed. A living basket of flowers can be placed indoors in a sunny window, outdoors on a porch, patio, fence, or any other structure that can support the weight of the basket.
To get the biggest WOW factor from a container of blooming plants, pick some of these 5 best flowers for hanging baskets.
Let’s dig in!
Begonia (Begonia boliviensis)

A great plant for a full sun location. The waxy-looking leaves and pendulous blooms of a begonia are attractive and will cascade over a hanging basket about 1-2 feet (30 – 60 cm).
Keep soil moist at all times and deadhead to promote more blooms.
It can grow in the soil in the garden but it tends to blend in among other plants. So I would recommend you to plant it in a hanging basket or a pot.
Fuschia (Fuschia)
Fuchsias will grow fast and vigorously when well fed and placed in a shady location. The plant will quickly fill a hanging basket and cascade over the sides 2-3 feet (60 – 90 cm) and produce bi-color, pendulous flowers all summer. It’s just lovely to have fuschias blooming in a hanging basket. I see them often at the local nursery.
As the fuchsia grows, pinch off stem tops to force side growth and a fuller plant. The tips of the side growth can be pinched off as needed to keep the fuchsia neatly shaped.
Deadhead fuschia to promote continuous blooms. The plant will stop flowering in the middle of summer but will start blooming again when the temperature cools down.
Impatiens (Impatiens walleriana)
All varieties of this reliable annual are shade-lovers. Impatiens are perfect for growing in hanging baskets and will quickly fill up and spill over a standard size hanging basket when given partial shade and plenty of water.
Select from a single or double-petaled blooms in a wide array of colors. Deadhead spent blooms to keep plant tidy-looking and producing blooms.
I have a couple of impatiens in my garden. They look fine and new blooms are emerging. As such, this beautiful plant is suitable for both a hanging basket and in the garden!
Petunia (Petunia Hybrida)

A hanging basket favorite because of its easy-care nature, versatile growing habits, multitude of bloom colors, and delightful fragrance. Petunias are hardy, vigorous growing plants that are disease and pest-resistant.
Place hanging basket in a sunny location, keep soil moist and deadhead spent blooms.
It also can be planted on a rockery setting to let it cascade down the rocks. It looks stunning.
Portulaca (Portulaca grandiflora)
Also known as Moss Rose, portulaca loves a spot in the sun. This flower is heat-tolerant and drought-resistant and will produce multi-color blooms throughout the summer.
This plant will spill over a hanging basket and can hang 3-4 feet (90 – 120 cm) below the basket bottom. Deadhead to keep plant looking tidy.
